First Day of My Internship

What happened today?????
I went to my Internship, Which is at Balboa Park in the Park & Recreation volunteer Department. I learned about what I am going to be doing and what projects I'm going to be doing. One mini project I did on the first day was researching our city councils districts and write down their names and what part of the city the protect or provide for. One project I'm going to be doing is writing a little section about volunteering in their monthly news letter. Another project I might be doing, but still don't know much about is, working in the Aquatics section maybe working on recruiting people to lifeguard or pool watchers. Getting more people too volunteer.
How did you get to internship????
My Dad drove me to my Internship. He was a little late, but when I finally got there I couldn't find my building so after walking around for 15 min I finally meet a lady who was kind enough to show me where too go. Even though she showed me the wrong place but it kind of helped because it was really close to it.
What did you do for lunch???
For lunch I picked it up downstairs and waited for my dad to pick me up.
How did you get home??
My Dad picked me up and then we went home.
How did everything go?
My first impression was, "oh no a office!" because I don't want to be sitting all day in front of a computer. But overall it went okay. I was kind of nervous at first and still am. But it was just barley my first day so I didn't do much. My mentor showed me around the office and she also showed me my little cubical. Then she introduced me too the people she works around. So I am hoping that my projects are exciting and my internship will be some where I want too go rather then some where I need to go.

The Economic Problems Then & Now

In Franklin D. Roosevelt's first Inaugural address, that took place on March 4th 1933, he addresses the economic problems that America was going through. He explained that is was becoming harder for Americans to pay bills, and that there are many unemployed Americans which is explained in this quote, "In such a spirit on my part and on yours we face our common difficulties. They concern, thank God, only material things. Values have shrunken to fantastic levels; taxes have risen; our ability to pay has fallen; government of all kinds is faced by serious curtailment of income; the means of exchange are frozen in the currents of trade; the withered leaves of industrial enterprise lie on every side; farmers find no markets for their produce; the savings of many years in thousands of families are gone. More important, a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.” I can connect this to a modern day problem we are having in American right now, our economic crisis. Us, Americans are suffering from similar problems today.

“More important, a host of unemployed citizens face the grim problem of existence and an equally great number toil with little return. Only a foolish optimist can deny the dark realities of the moment.” A quote pulled from Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first Inaugural speech. In this quote Franklin Roosevelt is explaining how there are a lot of people who are unemployed and they are very unhappy. A quote taken from an article found online, loss of 1,000,000+ jobs this year portends serious problems for 2009”,talks about how we the number of unemployment is high but is only going to worsen in 2009. This quote said by Obama in a radio address, “We have now lost 1.2 million jobs this year, and if we don’t act swiftly and boldly, most experts now believe that we could lose millions of jobs next year”.

World War one is the main cause that led to the depression in the 1930's, which led to the New Deal during 1933-1938. The after-effect of World war one is what caused a big economy problem starting in the 1920's. Then in 1929 the stock market crashed, kind of similar to what’s happening to our stock market. It is said by istock analyst, “Corporate Corruption, Overvalued Stocks ,Mortgage crisis, Over unregulated financial institutions and Unregulated big speculators playing short” seem to be the top reasons for the 2007-2008 stock market crash. Back in 1929,” Overvalued Stocks, Low Margin Requirements, Interest Rate Hikes, Poor Banking Structures” was to blame for the stock market’s crash.

In our modern day society we are suffering from a major economic crisis. In an article I read they predicted, "If the economy does contract, economic seers expect a shallow retrenchment, most likely in the first six months of the year. Most see only limited improvement in the latter half. “So far what we have seen in our economic crisis is a majority of unemployed people, foreclosed homes, some companies are going Bankrupt, and even banks have to shut down.

These kinds of problems were also happening back then it was said that Banks were lending out much more money than what they had and that caused a lot of families to loose their savings. People were getting pay cuts at their jobs, a lot of products on the market such as home supplies weren’t being sold and forced companies to loose their business as well.

Barack Obama's inauguration

"This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.
For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do. "

I think Obamas smart choice of words is what makes his speeches so strong and I think his confidence is why most people have so much trust in him. I felt like this quote I took from the Inauguration speech is a great example of how well he does at giving speeches but if you really look into the choice of words used in the quote it has a lot of meaning to it and connects to our every day lives as Americans.

"Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America." I believe that this part of the quote, many American will find inspiring. I think it will inspire them to still have hope in America. To not worry so much about the Economy problems. Now currently in America, we are having a big economy problem so many people are losing their jobs, many houses are being foreclosed, and schools dont have the enough funds to support the students education but what does Obama say to inspire us,

"We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. "

Bush saves the Pacific

George W. Bush who's main enviormental concerns are related to the ocean will be protecting 195,280 square miles of the Pacific ocean. According to the Washingtonpost it took affect on January 6th 2009.His plans are to prohibit oil & gas exploration. Bush a fisherman himself is making commercial fishing illegal in that area as well, but recreation fishing will be allowed upon fishing permits. In this article there were different quotes that either agreed with Bush or Disagreed with him ,

Agree
It has taken 137 years, since the creation of America's first national park in Yellowstone in 1872, to recognize that unique areas of the world's oceans deserve the same kind of protection as we have afforded similar places on land," Reichert said. "And none too soon."

Disagree
"If you're going to keep the public out of a public area, you need a darned good reason to do that," said Nussman, whose group represents manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers who supply the sport fishing industry. "We don't think they've met that 'darned good reason' test."

In 2006 Bush also protected a major part of the Hawaiian Islands. What most people might find confusing is,why he didn't do much about any other enviormental problems. Such as climate change. In an article,"Bush's seven deadly environmental sins " Katharine Mieszkowski writes out seven things bush did or didn't do that had no positive impact on Global Warming. He first disagrees with reducing greenhouse gas emissions, then he vows to the veto legislation that would have limited greenhouse gases. The he ignored and did nothing about the plan he annouced to have energy efficient cars by 2020, he never offered any protection over the endangered or threated species, none of the land that was going to be drilled for hydrocarbons was developed. Katharine Mieszkowski also writes that Bush has never actully been to the forest or trees. The last deadly enviromental sin Bush commited was, Choked our clean-air standards, he didnt lower the regulations of air pollution. To me I think Bush doesnt see it as a big problem because permited more pollution to National parks.

My Internship

  • What do you hope to learn or discover about the "adult" world of work while you are at your internship?

In my internship I hope to learn about how the enviorment is like in the work place. I also would like to discover if this is something I would like to pursue in my life. I think in general being at my internship will show me what it is like at a working enviorment and what to expect when you get older and have a career.

  • What do you hope to learn or discover about yourself and your identity while you are at your internship this semester?

When I go to my internship I would like to see how comfortable I am working with other people that I barely met or know. At my internship I might also discover how well I do while working under pressure or very strict deadlines. Also in general if this is something I would see myself doing.

  • What goals do you have for yourself for your internship experience?

- One of my goals is to learn a lot more about the Medical Field and how it is as a career. Another goal I have is to have a positive experience at my internship. My last is to gain something from this internship experience, it can be that I learned a lot about what this is like or what to expect when working in this kind of enviorment.
