The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

In this book a symbol that is used is the Cans of meat. The cans are very nice looking on the outside, and shiny. So it attracts people to buy it, but inside of the can of meat, it is very nasty looking. This is a symbol to the Immigrants. The people who do want to come to America believe that it is a very beautiful place, like the outside of the canned meat, But in reality America is very bad, just like the Inside of the canned meat.
The main theme in this book was focused on the, "American Dream". It was Ona's brother who wanted the family who lived in Linthuania, to move to America. He said that a friend told him that America was a great place and that you can get alot of money just by living their. He also belived that the family would have a happier life their and that it is a good place to live. But all this was not true.
"I wrote with tears and anguish, pouring into the pages all that pain which life had meant to me. Externally the story had to do with a family of stockyard workers, but internally it was the story of my own family. "

Thanksgiving Break

I am thankful for my family, mostly my parents. They do so much for me, and help a lot.
The three things that I want to accomplish during Thanksgiving break are
  1. Have a rough draft of my essay.
  2. I want to have a list of answers to the questions I have, I would do some research online and record what If find.
  3. I also want to have a even more detailed story board for my project, which includes what text I want shown on the side of the video, the background, any sound affects, etc.

Beach Project

What are you discovering so far?
-So far,I am learning a lot about Illnesses people get due to polluted ocean water. When I interviewed Dr.Rodney Hood I learned about the symptoms and what people can do to prevent getting these Illnesses. He told us during the interview that the most common Illnesses swimmers/surfers get are ear infections and he also said that it is not the bacteria in the water that causes the ear infections but it is the water that gets into the ear and causes it to swell up.
What surprises you about this project?
- I haven't really found anything surprising about this project so far, but I am sure that I will once I get out and start interviewing people.

What are your next steps to have a cool product and a great piece of writing?
- Today in class we did a peer critique, and I think that my next step is so schedule when I am going to interview lifeguards and also to find out when I am going to go out and interview swimmers and surfers. I need to find transportation and get that figured out to. Another step is to make a more descriptive story board so as soon as I come back from break I can get straight to editing the video. So those things need to be done at least by the end of this week.

I think in this article they only mentioned Blacks, Woman, and the Young is beacause those were the top three groups who had the disability of not being able to vote back then. I do agree that he could have mentioned other race's in the article. There are many other races in America that did play a big role on voting. Such as the Hispanic/Latino race. In the following article, "In key states,Latino vote fueled Obama's Victory".
It mentioned how much of an impact the Hispanic race had on voting.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"When they turned out in record numbers to vote for Democrat Barack Obama, they not only erased recent gains by Republicans but shattered the myth of a black-Latino divide."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the article they also mentioned that Obama won 57 percent of the Hispanic votes in florida compared to McCains 42 percent.

Similar Research products

Three aspects that I like from this video are
  1. The Interviews from different people, which allows different opinions

  2. It gives a lot of Information in a short period of time

  3. I liked how they show the seals in the ocean while the people are talking, also how the beach is in the background when they are giving an interview

Three aspects that I like from this video are
    1. How they put the question in text then play the answers
    2. Short and Informative
    3. Different Opinions

Election Reflection

My Thoughts on this election was unsure. I think Obama will make a great president and will be a big part of history. My guess was that Obama was going to win to me it seemed kind of obvious that he was going to win, because he was the change people wanted. I also believe a majority of people, voted out of popularity and that they didn't actully look into the canidates beliefs and thoughts.I am defenintly looking foward to changes when Obama goes into office next year. One thing that I am expecting to change when he goes into office is, war. Because he talked so much about ending war and bringing back the troops from Iraq in about a six month time period.
I think that our class has done a good job addressing the elections. In class we will have open disscusions, I like that because it gives every one in the class a chance to express their own thoughts and opinions. We can improve by doing this maybe every day & we as a class talk about a current news story and all of us in the class will get a chance to talk about what we think. When I am not at school I do talk alot about the topics we talk about in class sometimes my family will have friends over and they will start talking about different stuff like the elections or the economy. Sometimes I like to hear what they have to say because it gives me another view and then I will tell them my different views. So I do find having conversations in class usefull outside of class.

Beach Research Blog # 2

For my beach research I decided to focus on my second question which was
"How does the bacteria infested ocean water affect local swimmers/surfers,and what can the community do to help?"
I thought that this question was more interesting. My other question seemed like it would be harder for me to get evidence or answers to my research so I decided to focus on this one.

For this project I am going to create a short informative video that will be about 2 to 3 minutes long and will have interviews from different people such as

  1. Surfers
  2. Swimmers
  3. Local emergency paramedics

The video will also include what we as a community can do to help keep the ocean clean, and what pollutants are found in the ocean water and what the number one contributor to ocean pollution is.

The questions I would ask the surfers/swimmers are

  • What is the most common illness you get from being out in the water?
  • What is your most serious illness you have gotten from being out in the water?
  • What do you think are the causes for your illnesses? ( highly bacteria infested waters, being in the water to much/long, weather, etc)
  • In your opinion which beach in San Diego is the most sanitary and which is the least sanitary?
  • What can we do as a community to help keep the water clean?
  • What would you say is the number one contributor to beach pollution?
The questions I would ask paramedics are

  • What is the worst illness you have seen from people who have been out in the water?
  • Which would you say is the most common?
  • What do you think are the causes for these illnesses? ( highly bacteria infested waters, being in the water to much/long, cold weather, etc

Detailed Schedule

Nov.10- Do some research on what pollutants are found in the ocean water, and what bacteria in the ocean causes the swimmers/surfers to get sick. Also look up what can be done to help keep the water clean.

Nov.11- Continue research.

Nov.12- Go out and Interview at Torry Pines, Interview paramedics come back and record the answers. Help Kaory with article.

Nov.13- Go to Ocean Beach ,Crystal Pier, come back and record the answers. Help Kaory with article.

San Diego Beach Research Questions

1.How does the bacteria in the ocean affect swimmers/surfers,and how often does it affect them?
For this project we are currently doing in class I am hoping to research how the bacteria infected water affects swimmers/surfers and how often do they get affected by it. In a article I read they stated _______________________________________________
"Local surfers refer to the cove's elbow as the "stank bank," where everything from kelp to lost watches collects on shore, said Glenn Paculba, a local surf shop owner and surfer. "Customers come into my store and complain about getting sick after surfing there."
_______________________________________________
In my research I would interview people from different beaches not just one beach and see which beach seems to affect swimmers more.
2. How are ocean animals affected by the pollution of the water and how is the population of these ocean animals affected?
For this question I would like to see how ocean animals such as sea birds, dolphins, sea lions, etc are affected by the pollution in the water and if the pollution is affecting the animals population.
