The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

In this book a symbol that is used is the Cans of meat. The cans are very nice looking on the outside, and shiny. So it attracts people to buy it, but inside of the can of meat, it is very nasty looking. This is a symbol to the Immigrants. The people who do want to come to America believe that it is a very beautiful place, like the outside of the canned meat, But in reality America is very bad, just like the Inside of the canned meat.
The main theme in this book was focused on the, "American Dream". It was Ona's brother who wanted the family who lived in Linthuania, to move to America. He said that a friend told him that America was a great place and that you can get alot of money just by living their. He also belived that the family would have a happier life their and that it is a good place to live. But all this was not true.
"I wrote with tears and anguish, pouring into the pages all that pain which life had meant to me. Externally the story had to do with a family of stockyard workers, but internally it was the story of my own family. "
